GREENHOUSE GASES: RESULTS

In line with the commitments made in 2003 and 2006, Renault is reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the vehicle life cycle. It has already made significant progress, with targets on CO2 emissions already met... before aiming to take a step forward.

Design and production

Renault has considerably reduced the pollution emitted by its production sites. Following is a review of the main results.

Energy consumption

Facts: the Renault group reduced overall energy consumption per vehicle by 17% between 2002 and 2009. In 2009 average consumption was 2.14 MWh per vehicle.

CO2 emissions

Facts: Renault has included in its accounts direct emissions of greenhouse gases since 2003 and indirect emissions stemming from electricity purchases since 2009. This data is verified by statutory auditors. Direct emissions are linked to burning fossil fuels on site (boilers, engine test benches, company vehicles) and the loss of refrigerant fluids (Scope 1). Indirect emissions correspond to greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the production of the electricity purchased by Renault.

Direct and indirect emissions of greenhouse gases (GGS) for the Group totaled 1,191 kteq CO2 (CO2 equivalent kilotonnes) in 2009. Direct GGS emissions were down in 2009, from 755 kteq CO2 in 2003 to 577 kteq CO2 in 2009, with more sites included in the scope and company vehicles factored in. Using the same scope as in 2003, GGS emissions in 2009 came to 508 kteq CO2, for a decrease of 32%.

Renault continues to develop renewable energies. In 2008 thermal solar panels were installed and put into operation to supply the hot water needed for processes at the Spanish sites. The panels now provide 37% of the energy needed to heat the cleaning baths at Seville and 50% of the energy needed for the surface treatment baths at Valladolid Montaje. Renault is starting construction on its Tangiers plant in 2012. The new industrial site will be zero carbon and zero industrial effluent, thanks to optimized use of energy and water and the use of renewable energies and new technologies.

Vehicle use

The Group is illustrating its commitment on global warming and reasserting the environmental objectives taken in 2006 as part of Renault Commitment 2009.

Renault eco² vehicles

  • Renault Commitment 2009 objectives: Sell 1,000,000 vehicles emitting less than 140 g/km of CO2 and 330,000 vehicles emitting less than 120 g/km.
  • Results: In 2008 in Europe, Renault sold 922,946 vehicles emitting less than 140 g/km of CO2 and 364,091 emitting less than 120 g/km.

Alternative energies

  • Objectives set in 2006: Sell electric vehicles by 2011.
  • Results: At end-2007, Carlos Ghosn announced the large-scale launch of electric vehicles in Israel, Portugal and Denmark for 2011, as part of the Better Place project. It also signed a memorandum of understanding with French electricity utility EDF in 2008 to develop an efficient electric energy distribution network for vehicles.
