REDUCING NOISE POLLUTION

Renault’s objective for many years has been to bring noise levels down to: 71 decibels (dB) as a measure of exterior noise for gasoline-powered vehicles and 72 dB for diesel vehicles.

This is an ambitious aim given that the current regulation is 74 dB – and that a 3 dB drop is equivalent to reducing actual noise by half! Renault has already met this objective with several vehicles in the range through innovative action.

Designing quieter vehicles

Acoustic test

To meet the 71 dB objective, Renault worked in the design phase, making breakthroughs on noise-emitting equipment such as engines, suspension, exhausts, and tires.

A pioneer in noise reduction, Renault is continuously developing research programs to cut vehicle noise. The technological progress it makes in these programs give rise to new acoustic equipment, fitted on the following, particularly quiet, Renaults.

Vel Satis, Twingo, Laguna… silence, please!

Vel Satis started the silent ball rolling in 2001 by winning the Golden Decibel award.  Thanks to numerous acoustic innovations, Vel Satis was the first European vehicle, along with Laguna 25, to break the 71 dB barrier.

In 2007, Twingo (some engines) joined Vel Satis, Modus, Espace, Laguna, Kangoo, Mégane in the 71 dB club, emitting 50% less noise than Twingo 1. This progress was made possible by the vehicle’s all-new structure that effectively filters out noise generated by the engine and transmission.

Laguna acoustics were also designed to emit minimal noise levels:

  • engine boom  was considerably reduced at low speeds by using a twin-mass low inertia damping flywheel, and at high speeds by using two balance shafts,
  • the automatic gearbox casings were stiffened to limit resonance,
  • vehicle structure was carefully designed to filter vibration.
