RENAULT AND SITA

Renault, SITA-France1 and INDRA INVESTISSEMENT SAS2 have joined forces to speed the development of end-of-life vehicle recycling. In a world first, three complementary entities are teaming up to ensure the economic and environmental success of this rapidly changing industry.

Renault thus becomes the first carmaker to make a recycling commitment of this scale, directly with industry operators. This is a major component in the Group's environmental policy.

SITA, French leader in recycling

  • Activities: waste collection, sorting and processing; recovery, recycling and production of high-quality secondary raw materials3.
  • 2.6 million metric tons of secondary raw materials recovered a year (270,000 metric tons of metals, 100,000 plastic and 90,000 tires and rubber products).
  • Revenues generated from recycling in 2007: €400 million.

A new step forward for Renault in recycling

A pioneering joint venture in automotive recycling

Renault and SITA, French leader in recycling, are to set up a 50/50 joint venture. The objective of this entity is to accelerate the roll-out, initially in France, of end-of-life vehicle processing.

The joint venture will take control of INDRA INVESTISSEMENT SAS, a company with 30 years' experience in vehicle recovery and whose skills in secondary raw materials3 constitute a solid base for the new entity to build on.

Objective: recover 95% of the mass of each vehicle by 2015

The rallying of Renault, SITA and INDRA skills and resources will optimize end-of-life vehicle processing in the best ecological and economic conditions. Together, these companies are working to meet an ambitious objective in 2015: recover 95% of the mass of each end-of-life vehicle. To do so, they are:

  • increasing the reuse rate for products and raw materials in existing processes,
  • developing new procedures, especially in recycling materials in end-of-life vehicles,
  • working actively with all actors in the industry and the automotive sector.

Long-term, this new step in Renault’s environmental commitment will result in similar partnerships worldwide, an approach that will contribute to the emergence of other environment-linked activities.

Renault’s global commitment to recycling end-of-life vehicles

Renault has since 1995 led an ambitious international environmental policy that factors in the complete vehicle life cycle, from design to end of life.

The Renault eco² range identifies the brand’s most ecological and environmental vehicles with a view to making progress available to the greatest number. Among other criteria, Renault eco2 cars contain at least 5% recycled plastic.

Renault is reasserting its leadership in recycled plastic. The Group has for ten years led a policy of designing vehicles that are easy to dismantle and recover at end of life. By doing so, it has made a big contribution to the emergence of the first high-tech plastic recycling industries.
