NATURAL RESOURCES

The earth has a wide range of natural resources. They are all threatened by depletion to a greater or lesser extent, depending on how they are managed by man.

Fossil fuels: reserves that will inevitably be exhausted

Many experts around the world have put forward probable dates for the exhaustion of fossil fuels. Their hypotheses vary from a few hundred to even a few dozen years.

What is clear, however, is that the pace of renewal of gas, oil, coal and other natural resources cannot keep up with the current and expected pace of consumption.

Water resources: already insufficient locally

Water is one of the earth's most precious resources. It is essential not only for human life, but also for animals and plants.

Demand for fresh water is increasing continuously. However:

  • it accounts for less than 3% of the water present on the planet (water in its liquid form is made up primarily of sea water);
  • 74% of this fresh water is stored in the form of ice;
  • climate change is accelerating evaporation;
  • it is exposed to pollutant emissions caused by human activity that make some resources unsuitable for consumption.
