GROUP

DOUAI - RSAS

Set up in 1970, the Douai plant is located in a region of considerable industrial activity. Douai is one of Renault's main bodywork assembly plants, by virtue of its workforce and its production capacities.

Situation

The Georges Besse plant is located in a semi-urban industrial area. It covers a total area of 350 ha spanning the municipal districts of Brebières, Cuincy, Lambres-lez-Douai and Quiery La Motte.

The nearest homes are 250 m to the north of the plant boundaries, and the nearest schools are in Cuincy, 2 km north-east of the plant. The buildings occupy a total area of 350 ha, of which 115 ha is covered and 45 ha occupied by buildings.

First ISO 14001 certification obtained in 1999.

ISO 14001 certification was obtained in August 1999 and has been renewed every year following audits. This clearly reflects the commitment made by the Georges Besse plant to environmental protection.

The ISO 14001 standard is based on two fundamental principles: regulatory compliance and continuous improvement. The site's environmental policy is focused on analysis and information, so that it can certify the application of sound ecological practices at any time.

Highlights

Our environmental policy and the associated management system based on Renault's environmental network have both helped to make our factory an environmentally-friendly establishment that has been ISO 14001-certified since 31 August 1999. This certification can only be renewed thanks to the efforts that all our employees make every day, in line with the Eco2 signature of Renault’s vehicles.

34 kg of recycled plastic, representing 14% of total plastics in the vehicle, are used to make New Scenic III. A performance that outstrips the demands of the Renault Eco2 signature for 5% of recycled plastic. The weight of recycled plastics has been doubled in comparison with Scenic II. According to Clément Boutonnet, recycling manager in the vehicle project: “Our efforts focussed on the interior parts, such as the structure of the dash and the raised floors”. Moreover, the initiatives taken at Renault Douai in the realm of waste sorting have set new standards both in the group and in the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

The environmental protection unit reports to the technical and sustainable development departments. The site’s environmental efforts over the last five years have focussed on the protection of water, which accounted for investments of €5 million. These investments were supplemented by subsidies from the local Nord-Pas de Calais water agency. Investments were made in:

- The installation of a retention and settling tank for rain water,

- The installation of a membrane filter bioreactor for the treatment of industrial water,

- The ultrafiltration of the surface treatment tanks,

- The installation of “CDO-Meter” with continuous monitoring,

the installation of hydrocarbon separators and a retention channel in the goods-in and goods-out zone and in the area where truck drivers perform administrative formalities.
