Q&A FOR INNOVATION

Q&A with Rémi Bastien – Head of DREAM – Research, Advanced Studies and Materials Division.

You were appointed to head DREAM on January 1, 2009, in a tough environment. What role do you have in mind for DREAM?

Rémi Bastien – Head of DREAM

Crises also bring opportunities. In Chinese, crisis and opportunity are the same word! What’s more, history has shown that all crises have led to innovation. The role of DREAM is to prepare the future, generate innovation and position itself as a pathfinder for Renault.

What are the key areas of research for the future?

Renault’s innovation strategy is based on four main themes: CO2/Environment, Safety, Onboard Comfort, and Dynamic Performance. Those four themes structure our technology plan and Nissan’s, which facilitates cooperation and synergies.

A fifth cross-cutting theme – competitiveness – ties all the others together and aims to enhance the performance of engineering.

How do you focus energy on innovation?

Innovation is by nature cross-cutting and international. It is the fruit of cross-business work, lead by a team. This work is managed across the businesses. The five strategic themes are structured with their own leaders, aims, schedules and progress indicators. They are broken down into concrete projects, targeted on improvements for customers. Every project is structured in the same way and the business line actors apply their expertise. They are building skills for the future based on technical road maps.
