ENVIRONMENT

PRODUCTION

Environmental respect begins on production sites. The commitment made by Renault in 1995 is reflected today by complete success: all of the company’s production sites have obtained ISO 14001 certification.

ISO 14001 : an environmental standard

ISO 14001 certification reflects the quality of the site's environmental management system. For industrial sites, it constantly measures progress made in terms of water and energy consumption, visual and noise pollution, atmospheric emissions, and production waste. That all of Renault’s plants have obtained certification demonstrates the Group’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Over 10 years of ISO 14001

Sandouville was the first Renault plant to obtain ISO 14001 certification, in 1998. The certification cycle continues today, by developping new Renault industrial complexes throughout the world (Morocco, India, Russia...). The Group is thus confirming its ongoing environmental, economic and social involvement at all of its sites.

Major progress

Since 1997, environmental management at Renault sites has yielded the following results:

  • 30% reduction in energy consumption (kW per vehicle)
  • 65% reduction in water consumption (m3 per vehicle)
  • 70% reduction in waste (kg per vehicle)
  • 40% reduction in volatile organic compounds (kg per vehicle)
  • 47% reduction in toxic discharge into water medium

Technological breakthroughs

The experience acquired since 1995 on various technologies, developped on Renault manufacturing sites, allowed for an early integration of innovative solutions on new Renault sites.

Two examples:

1) The Tangier site: rewarded during the fifth edition of the Sustainable Energy European awards 2011, organized by the European Union in the "Manufacturing" category. The Tangier site will be a world premiere in terms of manufacturing capacity with 400,000 vehicles a year at 98% zero carbon emissions, thanks to energy provided by a wind park and heating system powered by biomass.

2) France sites : In partnership with Gestamp Solar, Renault launches the world's largest solar energy project in the car industry l'industrie by installing solar panels in its French manufacturing sites. The project will be developped in Douai, Maubeuge, Flins, Batilly, Sandouville and Cléon (ISO 14001 certified since 2000). The panels will cover a total area of  450, 000 metres squared (equalling to 60 football fields), delivering a power of 60 MW (with a yearly consumption of a city of 15 000 inhabitants).
