SUPPLIERS

Suppliers account for 80% of total vehicle production costs. It is therefore essential for Renault to gain their commitment and to make them part of its approach to sustainable development.

Employee rights 

In its Declaration of Employees’ Fundamental Rights in October 2004, Renault encourages suppliers to “implement equivalent principles in their own companies”. The Group makes these principles a condition for a long-term partnership.

 

By 2006, 95% of the Group’s usual suppliers had agreed to respect the principles set out in the Declaration of Employees’ Fundamental Rights. This formal commitment is a criterion of supplier selection in three priority areas: no child labour, no forced labour, and a policy of health, hygiene and safety that complies with Renault’s own policy in this field. 


Environment   

Also in 2006, the supplier selection process was amended to request a formal commitment by suppliers to all applicable environmental legislation. Calls for tender systematically refer to current environmental standards for the substances contained in the parts delivered and to the recycling of parts and materials.

 

In 2008, the sustainable development plan for Purchasing consolidated its second phase of maturity through a range of actions with significant content. The objective was to achieve and maintain a high level of social and environmental maturity across the supply chain.

 

The monitoring procedures put in place by players in the social and environmental fields are part of a policy of continuous improvement. Suppliers are asked to implement action plans whenever necessary, until they reach compliance.

 

The main actions seek to:

·          train suppliers and buyers;

·          map strong and weak points through self-appraisals;

·          assess the compliance of supplier sites through our quality specialists;

·          have some sites audited by outside firms.

 

Our sustainable development plan for Purchasing has once more been endorsed by improved ratings from Vigeo and DJSI/SAM. Renault is firmly established among the front-runners for social and environmental practices relating to the supply chain.
