GOOD PRACTICES IN FAVOR OF SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

In addition to the launch of the zero-emission vehicle, innovative good practices can help to cut our energy consumption immediately. Renault is actively leading a policy to raise public awareness of these ecological and economical methods.

Increasing awareness of eco-driving

Eco-driving is based on a simple but little known observation: drivers who adopt the best practices at the wheel can cut their fuel consumption by 10% to 20%. Everyone can drive ecologically: we simply have to learn how.

In 2008 Renault organized the Eco² Day in Paris, the Group’s first initiative to raise awareness of eco-driving. The general public was invited to attend training sessions and try out simulators and tools for all the family. On an initiative by Renault Polska, Eco² Days were also organized in the Baltic states.

The success of this operation prompted Renault to extend its scope of action:

  • In 2009, a meeting was organized in Hyères in the south of France between the sailor Ellen MacArthur and the general public to promote eco-driving,
  • Training programs for fleet operators and the general public were set up in France with ECF (École de Conduite Française), and in other countries with KDC (Key Driving Competence).

Promoting car sharing

Car sharing and eco-driving form a tight fit. The widespread use of car sharing offers many benefits.

  • Car sharing is more ecological. Reducing the number of vehicles that make the same journey cuts emissions of pollutant gases.
  • It is more economical, because users share the cost of the journey.
  • It is safer. Recent surveys made by insurance companies have shown that car sharing results in a drop in the number of road accidents.
  • And car sharing is more fun.

Renault has been officially encouraging its employees to car share since 1996. A special department was set up in the company, reorganized in 2007, and extended in 2008 to cover all the Group’s French entities. The extension of this initiative to international sites is being considered.

Supporting the worldwide development of a democratic and sustainable car

Ownership of and access to a motorized vehicle are on the increase in every corner of the planet. But despite this trend, access to mobility remains unequal.

Renault is financing and supervising numerous research projects that aim to reduce these inequalities significantly. The Group is closely involved in the international Mobility for Development research project under the auspices of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
