Meet the people: Arnaud Rouault
The Corporate Volunteer Programme (VIE) at Renault is an enriching experience on both a personal and professional level. Renault subsidiaries abroad regularly integrate young graduates and help them to find their marks within the company. Arnaud Rouault speaks about his VIE in Japan.

Graduated from the École Supérieure de Commerce business school in Paris.
Assistant Controller for Renault Japan.
Personal details: travel and hiking enthusiast.
"My passion for travel is my principal motivation. I love to seek out different ways of living and of thinking and that is what prompted me to join the VIE programme.
I began my VIE at Renault Japan in Tokyo in February 2003. Renault Japan has been in existence since 1999 and has about forty employees, six of whom are French. I am in charge of reporting for both the spare parts and car businesses. I handle both monthly reporting and financial sales forecasting, and I also have short missions such as the budget, the spare parts procedures manual, etc.
Japan is a fascinating country. Japanese society has two distinct, contrasting facets: on one hand it is very modern and futuristic, with undeniable technological superiority, and on the other, it is governed by complex rules of social behaviour which take their roots in ancient traditions. An understanding of the forms of polite address, for example, is essential in all social relationships other than those between good friends.
On a professional level, managing to surpass cultural differences is important in order to establish a good working relationship. It's not always easy and it takes time, but it is a fascinating exercise. I am also taking Japanese lessons on the side to acquire more intense cultural immersion.
The VIE is a two-year programme, which is long enough to familiarize yourself with a country and the surrounding region as well as with the company itself. In addition to being an incredible personal experience, it is also excellent professional training as well as a way for Renault to save time by training young people whom it can then go on to hire.
I haven't ruled out prolonging my stay in Japan when my VIE is over. Having begun my career there will be an advantage for me and I hope it will enable me to continue evolving on an international level."
