Renault in Turkey
Renault is the leading automobile brand in Turkey: one in every six passenger vehicles sold is a Renault.
Thanks to its partnership with Oyak, the Group has been present in the country for nearly 40 years. Today, Turkey plays an essential role in the Group’s strategy.
Turkish economic growth
The Turkish economy has been growing strongly for a number of years (around 5% in 2007). In 2007, the country recorded a GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of 482 billion dollars, despite obstacles including a trade deficit, political and economic crises, and inflation.
The automobile industry is one of the country’s most dynamic sectors. Several manufacturers are present, notably Renault, Toyota, Honda and Fiat Tofas. In 2007, 1.1 million vehicles were produced, of which 800,000 were exported. Production is expected to reach 2 million vehicles by 2010. The domestic automobile market is dynamic and promising: with 86 passenger vehicles and 128 LCVs for every 1,000 inhabitants, there is significant room for growth in the rate of vehicle ownership per household.
Renault, a major player in the Turkish automobile sector
In 2009, Renault will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its presence in Turkey. The Group’s long-term presence means it is almost a “national” brand. With a market share of 15.4%, it is the leader on the market for passenger vehicles, ahead of 45 other brands.
Renault has gained the confidence of Turkish drivers thanks to its partnership with the Oyak Group. Oyak and Renault work together through two companies: Oyak-Renault for production and export, and Renault M.A.I.S. for marketing.
As well as being a major local market for the Group, Turkey is an export base for the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe and Russia.
Vehicles for the Turkish market
The two best selling Renault vehicles in Turkey are Symbol and Mégane Sedan. Turkish drivers tend to prefer sedan-type vehicles.
The Group is also present in the estate car segment, with Clio III enjoying significant success. Production of Clio Estate started in late 2007 at the Bursa factory. This compact estate car, called Clio Grand Tour on the Turkish market, is positioned as an attractive, dynamic vehicle for younger drivers.
A brand built on quality
The Oyak-Renault factory in Bursa is an integrated industrial hub which achieves one of the best scores for industrial quality of all Renault plants.
Quality is also the key word with regard to sales and after sales service. The Turkish network can be proud that 81% of its customers are entirely satisfied. Throughout the country, Renault vehicles benefit from a solid reputation for quality, solidity and durability.
Goals for 2008
By producing Clio Estate/Grand Tour, ramping-up production at the Bursa plant from 43 to 60 vehicles per hour, and launching the K9K diesel engine (Renault’s best-selling engine, offering the lowest rate of CO2 emissions), Turkey will fully contribute to the success of the Renault Commitment 2009, both industrially and commercially.
