Acting for sustainable development involves acting to promote local development in the regions or countries where Renault has its operations.

The Group applies the same standards of quality and requirements in all countries. Locating business in a new country thus entails considerable effort in the areas of economic, environmental and social development.

This is illustrated by the action taken at the Pitesti site in Romania.

Economic development

Renault has invested more than €200 million in Pitesti, thus giving new impetus to the regional economy.

Suppliers

At the same time, the arrival of Western suppliers at Pitesti has created new jobs. Two examples are Auto Chassis International (ACI) and Valeo Câblage. Both companies have recruited employees locally, many from the Dacia group.

At Pitesti, Renault made an effort to work with local suppliers as much as possible. For the Logan, Renault has 13 Romanian suppliers.

Renault is training its suppliers so that they can develop:

  • more expertise, and more added value in their markets;
  • sustainable cooperation with the Group.

Environmental development

Remediation and compliance

With assistance from the Romanian government and the Pitesti regional environmental agency, the Dacia plant has developed a plan that takes environmental protection into account, to upgrade its facilities. It took 5 years and a €6 million investment to implement this plan. Today, the site respects Renault's environmental standards and targets.

Pitesti, taking action for the environment in Romania

Looking beyond soil remediation, Renault has implemented a number of initiatives to improve the plant's environmental performance, such as:

  • the modernization of wastewater treatment;
  • installing waste collection, storage and treatment facilities, the Davidesti subsurface containment facility in particular;
  • installing an ultrafiltration facility to recover all oil emulsions produced by engine machining.

The plant received ISO 14001 certification in July 2005.

Social development

Local employment

At Pitesti, Renault is working with local players to combat unemployment. This partnership paved the way for the founding of the Development and Solidarity Foundation of the Pitesti-Mioveni region in November 2001. The objective is to develop employment in the region by promoting business creation, capital investment and vocational training.

In its five years of existence, the Foundation has obtained real results:

  • more than 30 new companies were set up across the region;
  • it has now become a reference across the country, and has inspired similar initiatives in other regions of Romania.

Renault has also set up an in-house employment office, with a view to encouraging professional mobility.

Training

Renault's performance depends on its employees. Renault provides employees with training of the highest standard.

To complement its proactive training policy, Renault has set up the “Automobile Academy” based in Bucharest. The academy consolidates managerial, commercial and technical training programs for the employees of Dacia, Renault and Nissan in Romania.

Working conditions

Working conditions in Pitesti have improved considerably with the modernization of installations. Since 1999, Renault has taken steps to prevent occupational accidents by:

  • rolling out the Group's policy on working conditions;
  • drafting a "Health, Safety and Working Conditions Manual";
  • conducting audits on working conditions;
  • making employees aware of the need to wear individual protective gear;
  • installing first aid stations in the workshops;
  • taking workstation ergonomics into consideration to protect the health of employees by optimizing movement and posture;
  • adapting workstations for disabled people;
  • training employees in the use of chemicals (industrial toxicology, product storage, etc.).

In 2006, DACIA obtained the SSECT label (Health, Safety, Ergonomics and Working Conditions) certifying deployment of the management system in compliance with the Group’s requirements.
