Prevention

Renault's vehicles are equipped with driving aids designed to anticipate risks and avoid accidents. The objectives of this equipment are to:

  • develop the responsibility of the driver, primarily through:
  • - the speed limiter,
    - the seatbelt reminder system (SBR),

  • inform the driver, primarily through:
    - the tire pressure monitoring system,
    - the warning lights (belts, lights and ESP that make it easier to control the car during cornering or sudden maneuvers),

  • help the driver better assess the surrounding environment, primarily through:
    - xenon and bi-xenon headlamps,
    - additional cornering lamps,
  • promote driver concentration, primarily through automatic operation of the lights and wipers.

Correction

All Renault vehicles include equipment designed to compensate for driving errors:

  • anti-locking function (ABS with EBD),
  • Emergency Brake Assist (EBA),
  • Electronic Stability Program  (ESP), which helps the driver control the vehicle in bends and during unexpected maneuvers,
  • traction control (ASR),
  • variable-assist power steering.

Protection

In the event of an accident, maximum protection must be provided for all vehicle passengers, regardless of their seating position, age or body shape. All Renault vehicles are fitted with advanced protective systems:

  • a body structure that absorbs impact energy to protect the passenger compartment;
  • a reinforced passenger compartment that provides a protective cell for the occupants;
  • occupant restraint systems, front and rear headrests, and side/head/chest airbags that protect passengers in the cabin;
  • third-generation Renault System for Restraint and Protection (SRP) combining pretensioners with load limiters and controlled-deflation airbags;
  • protective systems designed specially for children.

Education

The Safety for all program

In 2000, Renault launched an international program called Safety for all. The idea is for parents, teachers and children to work towards a common aim: to train, educate and raise the awareness of young people on road safety, and to teach them how to behave on the road.

The program includes a range of initiatives aimed at different age groups:
- children
- teenagers
- young drivers
Rolled out in 22 countries, Safety for All is the biggest road safety awareness operation ever organized by an auto manufacturer.

GRSP/GRSI

As part of an action plan drafted to follow up the Mobility 2030 project initiated by the WBCSD, Renault made a commitment to promoting road safety in developing countries. These countries are particularly vulnerable – traffic accidents could become the third cause of mortality by 2020. The 12 companies involved in Mobility 2030 set up the Global Road Safety Initiative (GRSI).

The objective is to work with the authorities in emerging countries to set up a series of road safety initiatives. These include:

  • publishing guides to good road behavior;
  • opening regional centers for training and knowledge transfer in road safety;
  • providing financial assistance for local road safety initiatives.

This initiative operates under the aegis of a broader road safety program, initiated by the World Bank and a number of leading companies: the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP). Find out more about the GRSP:   http://www.grsproadsafety.org/ .

e-Safety

e-Safety is a European Commission initiative, backed up by Ertico – a structure developed to create intelligent transport systems and services (ITS) and the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

Its objective is to reduce road fatalities across Europe by promoting the development of new technology for use in transport. Since 2002, Renault has been contributing actively to the joint studies of public and private participants through the e-Safety forum. The Group is particularly involved in the "GST Rescue" project, which aims to fit all vehicles with a pan-European in-car emergency call system.
