Objectives and principles

Reduce stormwater-related pollution

• Prevent diffuse and accidental pollution (clean processes, detention tanks, oil removers, best practices, etc)
• Remove pollution through natural settling.    

Recycle water to save drinking water

• Use simple technology, of the same kind used to make river water drinkable.
• Avoid discharges into the stormwater network, since the technology cannot process certain components that hamper recycling:

                           - hydrocarbons
                           - soluble COD
                           - surfactants, 
                           - salinity/chlorides.

Results

The MCA Maubeuge site met 34% of its water needs with stormwater in 2007, saving 123,000 m3 of water.

Quality

• Requirements for industrial water: 

               - hydrocarbons < 1 (mg/l), 
               - suspended solids: no limit,
               - organic matter < 5 (mg/l),  
               - chloride < 60 (mg/l).  

• The required quality is obtained in both wet and dry weather.

• All processes are supplied.

• The water is less hard overall.           

Quantity

• The volume of stormwater available can provide more than 200,000 m3 recycled water per year. 
             

Cost

• Production: around 0.47 euros/m3 (2007).
• Savings: around 0.85 euros/m3 with respect to drinking water at Maubeuge.
