Eco Index

In 1995, Renault implemented a program to reduce the impact of packaging on the environment.

Initially, the program focused on operations along the production line to optimize the packaging of mass-produced parts. The results provided the basis for a formal definition of operations in a guide to the packaging of body and assembly parts.

Renault also developed a qualitative method to be used by suppliers to evaluate the ecological quality of their packaging. This method, known as the Eco Index, is used during projects to optimize packaging.

A total 200 suppliers have been trained to rate their packaging. They specify the results in the parts logistics purchasing conditions submitted to Renault.

Concern for the environment is also written into the new L3P logistics program (high-performance workstation-programmed logistics), which aims specifically at optimizing workstations.

By using smaller and more durable packaging, it is also possible to limit operations with low added value, such as removing part protection and making repeated trips for parts.
