It is the role of an independent certification body to assess the quality of an environmental management system based on the ISO 14001 standard  of the International Organization for Standardization. Successful certification illustrates a commitment to continuous improvement and to reducing the environmental impact of business activities. 

In february 2008, the Somaca plant (Casablanca) earned the ISO 14001 certification. The Avtoframos (Moscou) plant rolled out an Environmental Management System, and received the certification in april 2008. Today the certification covers 100% of the Renault group’s industrial activity, i.e.  38 industrial sites and subsidiaries.

Number of certified sites

To maintain its certified status, Renault must organize an annual internal audit  at each of its sites. These audits are performed on a multi-site basis, with the help of environment managers and technical experts. This system of organization offers a range of advantages: it develops employee know-how and fosters dynamic networking through information exchanges between different sites. 

It takes three to four weeks of training to qualify as an internal auditor, with recognized specialist knowledge on environmental questions.

At end-December 2007, Renault had trained 24 audit managers and 29 internal auditors.
