Situation

C.A.C.I.A. SA is located in the village of Cacia, on the northern edge of Aveiro. It is in Portugal's third-largest industrial centre. The plant is located on major motorways, enabling fast transportation to the rest of Europe.
The plant covers an area of 30 ha, of which 7 consists of buildings.

The site’s design is highly operational, guaranteeing an effective, efficient flow of people, products and equipment.

Water consumption

The decreases observed between 1998 and 2001 were achieved through:

  • upgrading some equipment to map consumption points more accurately,

  • training in the workplace on individual behaviour, improving sanitary facilities and water distribution (special valves and flow stop sensors).

  • improving sealing of the fire mains.

The increase observed since 2002 can be attributed to the drilling of a bore well to improve the quality of process supply water, and the construction of new buildings.

The 25% increase in water consumption in 2007 can be attributed to a 12% rise in activity, a 6% increase in the workforce and a higher number of days worked.

Water-borne effluents

To improve the quality of its liquid discharges, the plant has implemented quality assurance in the management of its treatment plant.

The reduction in the flow of organic matter observed since 2002 can be attributed to lower consumption of cutting fluids and the introduction of centralized management of industrial fluids.

SO2 and greenhouse gas emissions

The reduction in SO2 emissions can be attributed to the use of gas as a fuel.

Top

Waste

Tonnage of Ordinary Industrial Waste (OIW) rose between 1998 and 2005. This was due to an increase in the site’s assembly activity (increase in part packing and packaging waste).

Energy

The plant's activity increased over the period. The plant installed flexible production machines that consume more energy. In 2004, a working group on energy savings and improving the energy management system was formed with members from the maintenance department and manufacturers.
