Safety
Three questions for JY Le Coz, Director of Road Safety Policy
"Road safety is a key customer expectation. For Renault it is a requirement, a brand fundamental." JY Le Coz
Jean-Yves Le Coz, Director of Road Safety Policy
What safety technology is Renault developing?
Renault is developing technologies to:
Prevent accidents, with systems such as tire pressure monitoring, the speed limiter and intelligent navigation. This way, risks can be anticipated and the driver can concentrate on the road;
Correct vehicle trajectory, with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC/ESP). Those systems improve vehicle response in difficult or dangerous conditions, and compensate for inappropriate driver reaction (but without taking control out of the driver’s hands);
Protect, in the event of an accident, through controlled structure crumpling and the Renault System for Restraint and Protection (pretensioners, seatbelts with load limiters, controlled event airbags).
How does Renault choose the systems it fits on its vehicles?
Through accident analysis, Renault has developed extensive knowledge on accident mechanisms. We can assess the efficiency (lives saved and injuries avoided) of each safety system and rank the systems to be fitted on our vehicles to optimize their real safety. One of the first accident studies was made on the Dauphine! Since then, safety has always fuelled our technical thinking and we have never stopped innovating. Seatbelt load limiters and anti-submarining systems are Renault inventions.
How does Renault approach safety internationally?
Renault is expanding internationally. And so is its safety policy. Accident mechanisms in the new markets from those in Europe and we need to be aware of this to adapt our models. Renault is extending the accident research accomplished in Europe to local engineering centers in these new markets, transferring skills and expertise and working with local universities. Safety in emerging countries also means adapting to the needs and budgets of local customers. Logan is one of the safest vehicles on the road. It is affordable and is selling well – and so it is making a real contribution to improving real safety around the world.
